Course Overview

With the continued popularity of barbering, seize the opportunity to train as a barber and meet the need for industry ready and qualified graduates.

Skillsec’s New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering programme combines all the Classical Barbering skills of clipper, scissor, and razor cutting along with Street Smart blowout fades, line-ups, mullets and current colour and texture trends.

Beard shaping and design, blow-drying and styling hair through to the luxurious service of wet shaving with a cutthroat razor, will be taught alongside understanding the hair and skin, consultation skills and health and safety requirements.

Creating your own photographic portfolio of your work throughout the programme will ensure that you are able to market yourself and your skills to secure top quality job opportunities on successful completion of the programme..

Commercial work placement (off site) and on job placement within the commercial barbershop at 276 Moray place, will ensure you have the opportunity to experience the real life of running a chair in a commercial environment.

Course Information

Skillsec is approved by NZQA to deliver the New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering V2 at 276 Moray Place Dunedin Central.  

The Barber Educator is a qualified barber who has a passion for the industry, is creative, is supportive and is committed to the philosophy of “Growth through Education”.

Skillsec’s New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering V2 (Level 4) is approved by TEC for Student Loans and Allowances and Course related costs.

The Fees Free scheme is available on successful completion of your programme if you are eligible in 2025.

Student fees will be held in trust in compliance with section 236A of the Education Act 1989 as amended by the Education Act (No4) 199.

Entry Criteria

  • A minimum age of 16 years prior to the commencement of the course

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years secondary education

  • Sufficient Literacy and Numeracy skills to succeed in the attainment of this qualification

  • Must have an interest in hair and fashion

  • Must be well presented and have a bright and positive attitude

  • Must be fit and able to cope with the physical and mental demands of a commercial barber shop environment.

NOTE: For Learners whose first Language is not English they will be expected to provide evidence that an over IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5) Skillsec does not have the ability to enrol International Learners
